Black and white illustrations throughout. [From page 1] The 1996 AAUP Book jacket, and Journal Show serves a dual purpose - to honor and to instruct. The show recognizes meritorious achievement in the design, production, and manufacture of books, jackets, and journals by members of the university press community. It also provides an evaluation of our work and serves as a focus of discussion and a source of ideas for intelligent, creative, and resourceful bookmaking. The Book jacket, and Journal Show is our occasion to share techniques of design, production, and manufacture that benefit the work's subject matter and audience, that use available processes and materials imaginatively, that show appropriate concern for quality and attention to detail, and that allow us to accomplish all these things within the constraints of budgets and schedules. The 1996 show includes books published during 1995 (or too late in 1994 to be judged as part of last year's show). Jackets and paper covers from books published during 1995 were eligible for this year's jacket competition. Journals that were published at least twice per year during 1994 or 1995 could be submitted for the show. The 1996 AAUP Book jacket, and Journal Show will be displayed first at the Annual Meeting in Snowbird, Utah, in May 1996 and will subsequently travel to member presses and other interested institutions. Sixty-four presses submitted 670 entries to the 1996 Book jacket, and Journal Show. Of the 208 books entered in the typographic category, the jurors selected thirty-one books to comprise the typographic portion of the show. The jurors selected twenty-four books for the show from the ninety-six entered in the illustrated category. From the 358 jackets and covers submitted, twenty-seven were chosen for inclusion in the show. From the eight journals submitted, two were chosen for the show.
